I thought, with the holiday season nearly upon us, that it might be entertaining to look into the history of the greeting card. I discovered an eclectic blend of history, numerical facts, and amusing anecdotes. So let's take a moment during this hectic holiday season to relax and learn a little something about the Christmas Card.

- The custom of sending greeting cards dates back to Ancient China. In order to celebrate the New Year, the ancient Chinese delighted in sending messages of good will. Early Egyptians utilized papyrus scrolls to send their greetings. New Year's tidings were being produced in Germany as early as 1400.

- The origin of the Christmas Card is in England. They are a product of boys practicing their writing skills. The boys would practice by making cards for their parents.

Gift Card Scam - Truth or Fiction?

There's an email rumor going around describing a new scam in which crooks rob you of your gift card balance. If you buy Gift Cards from a display rack that has various store cards you may become a victim of theft. Crooks are now jotting down the card numbers in the store and then wait a few days and call to see how much of a balance THEY have on the card. Once they find the card is "activated," they go online and start shopping. You may want to purchase your card from a customer service person, where they do not have the Gift Cards viewable to the public.

Over the past few months, I've started sending birthday and anniversary cards to people in my church through the SendOutCards system. Disruption of mail service to the Gulf Coast

We received word that effective immediately, the US Postal Service is not accepting any Standard Mail or Periodicals Mail, from any source, addressed for delivery within the following three-digit (first three digits) ZIP Code ranges: 369, 393, 394, 395, 396, 700, 701 and 704.
This emergency action has been taken as a result of severe facility damage, evacuations, and other issues resulting from Hurricane Katrina.

The Postal Service is formulating plans to address the handling of Standard and Periodicals Mail already in the mail stream and addressed for delivery to these eight ZIP Code areas. Please feel free to go to http://www.usps.com/ for more information and updates or directly to:

Seven Rules for Sending Greeting Cards

1) Send the real thing! e-Cards are entirely too common and rarely show the attention to detail that sending a real card demonstrates.
2) Personalize it! Never limit yourself to the message that came in the card. Always add your own personal touch or flair.
3) Never use address labels for the recipient or metered postage. Use a stamp and handwrite or type the envelope.
4) When complimenting someone in your card, be specific with them about what it is you like about them. Don't just say you're a good person, be more specific (example: 'I like having you as a friend because you take a sincere interest in the things that matter to me!').
5) Make sending cards a habit instead of an occasional afterthought. You'll find your relationships will grow as you express yourself to the people that matter to you.
6) Don't wait for special occasions to send a card. Holidays and birthdays are great, but an unexpected card for no particular reason can have a great impact too!
7) Don't print it, stuff and send it yourself. Let us do that for you!
